Ways To Pack Appliances And Furniture For Self Storage

Self storage facilities accommodate all sorts of dry items except for those that are considered hazardous. Household items are some of those commonly kept in rental units particularly when families move to a new home, renovating an existing home. For students who are on vacation or school breaks but don’t want to burden themselves with bringing home all their devices and appliances before moving to a new dorm, putting their items in a self storage unit is the best option.

Appliances and furniture large or small can be safely kept in self storage units for as long as you want. But before you dump them in a unit, there are certain factors that you need to consider. One of the most important is the size of the rental unit. You have to make sure that you’re getting the right size and not one that’s too big. A good tip is to take the measurement of your furniture and appliances and plan how you’re going to store them in the facility.

The location of the unit is also essential. Keep in mind that you’ll be storing bulky and heavy items so it’s preferable to rent a self storage near your home or somewhere accessible. This will also be helpful particularly when you need to retrieve an item that you’ll be using. Another thing you need to ask from the staff is the hours in a day that clients can access their rental unit. Some facilities provide free access round the clock while some allow access during business hours only and may charge fees for access beyond those hours.

After considering the size and location, the next step is to pack your stuff. For appliances, it would be ideal to put them in their original boxes if you still have them. Otherwise, you need to purchase new, quality and sturdy boxes. Not a problem as these boxes are available in different sizes – small, medium and large so you can get those that are appropriate for your needs.

For your furniture, you can disassemble bed frames, cabinets, chairs and tables. Then tie them together using a tape or twine so you will know that they belong together. For the screws and bolts, place them in small plastic bags and tape them to the furniture parts that they belong to.

Upholstered furniture needs to be covered and you can use old bed sheets that you no longer use for this purpose. This is to prevent dust and dirt buildup over time.

If you’re storing a refrigerator, it would be a good idea to leave the door ajar. The idea here is to prevent the growth of molds inside. With molds building up inside, your appliance will eventually develop a bad smell.

Finally, organize your items properly inside the self storage unit. Leave spaces in the center and at the back to make it easy for you to move around and search for your items. This will also help you check your stuff if you need to without having to move boxes.
